Este trabalho analisa preliminarmente a instalação de Bibliotecas Populares no Brasil, contextualizando os diversos momentos históricos e a criação destas bibliotecas. A partir de consulta em diversas fontes (jornais locais, livros, entrevistas, etc.), iniciou-se uma investigação na Biblioteca Leopoldo Pires, da Liga Operária Beneficente, fundada em Florianópolis no ano de 1897, objetivando possibilitar uma recuperação histórica desta importante instituição.
Abstract: This work preliminary analyzes the installation of Community Libraries in Brazil, in the contexto f the diverse historical moments and the creation of these libraries. Base don research in diverse sources (local periodicals, books, interviews, etc.), an inquiry in the Leopoldo Pires Library, from the Liga Operária Benficente, was initiaded, stablished in Florianópolis in the year of 1897, objectifying to make possible a historical of this important institution.
