Apresenta os resultados da pesquisa realizada nos Arquivos Públicos Municipais do Estado de Santa Catarina, com o objetivo de identificar a existência de política de preservação do acervo, dos métodos utilizados para manter as condição de guarda dos documentos, e as dificuldades que o profissional encontra para realização das tarefas inerentes a conservação e restauração, sendo os dados coletados por meio de um questionário. Dos 293 municípios catarinenses, 28 municípios possuem Arquivos Públicos Municipais institucionalizados e 14 (50%) destes participaram da pesquisa respondendo o questionário. Os resultados revelam que grande parcela dos arquivos realiza algum procedimento em relação à preservação de seus acervos. Dentre os recursos utilizados para prevenção e combate de sinistros, 76,6% dos Arquivos se limitam a existência de extintores manuais. A falta de pessoal qualificado para atuar na área, de material adequado e de recursos financeiros que não são disponibilizados para a realização do trabalho são fatores que contribuem para agravar o quadro encontrado nos Arquivos Públicos Municipais Catarinenses.
Abstract: It presents the results of the research done in the Municipal Public Archives of Santa Catarina state, with the goal of identifying the existence of a collection preservation policy, of the methods used to keep the guarding condition of the documents, and the difficulties the professional finds to perform his tasks regarding the conservation and restoration, being the data collected by the means of a questionnaire. Of the 293 municipalities in Santa Catarina, 28 possess institutionalized Municipal Public Archives, and 14 of those (50%) answered the questionnaire and are participating in the research. The results reveal that a great part of the archives execute some procedure relating to the preservation of its collections. Amongst the resources used for prevention and combat of accidents, 76.6% of the Archives only have manual extinguishers. The lack of qualified staff to act in the area, of adequate material and financial resources that are not available for the accomplishment of the job are factors that contribute to aggravate the situation found in the Municipal Public Archives of Santa Catarina.
